12.2.0.1 EF 2 PROFESSIONAL STUDIES 165 ECTS
Structure of professional studies

The curriculum for the nursing degree in the Polytechnic educational programme is
composed of instructional modules considered to convey the central concepts of the
nursing science metaparadigm: the person, environment, health and nursing. Meleis has
clarified the concepts concerning nursing and establishes the corresponding concepts
as follows: nursing client, environment, health, interaction, the nursing process, nursing
therapeutics and transitions. The metaparadigm indicates how its central object is to
be considered. Nursing is based on respect for the individual and the personal
experiences of a human being.

Health is regarded as a process experienced by a human being. The modules are
divided into study units based on scientific knowledge derived from nursing science,
humanistic, natural, social and environmental sciences including medicine science.
Knowledge derived from related disciplines is applied together with nursing science in
such a way that they retain their scientific independence.

In the modules, several nursing theories representing different scientific-philosophical
approaches are used as a framework. Nursing can be approached through different types
of knowledge. The student nurse is expected to be able to integrate and apply theoretical knowledge and models as well as moral knowledge and knowledge of skills and abilities in different environments. Theories of nursing offer the students the framework to explore and discover answers to questions of what, how and why.
